Do we have free will?

Yes. The Torah tells us to choose, and the Rambam calls free will a pillar of the whole Torah — even though Hashem knows everything.

What the sources say

Layer by layer

Devarim 30:19Direct Source

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse — choose life.”

Pirkei Avot 3:15Direct Source

Rabbi Akiva: “Everything is foreseen, and freedom of choice is given.”

Berachot 33bDirect Source

“Everything is in the hands of Heaven except the fear of Heaven.”

Rambam, Hilchot Teshuvah 5:1–3Classical Interpretation

Every person can become as righteous as Moshe or as wicked as Yeravam; no one forces him. Without free choice, commandments and reward would make no sense.

Tanya, chapter 14Later Tradition

The Tanya teaches that anyone can be a beinoni — in control of what he thinks, says and does — at every moment.
