What this lesson is about

The Tanya reads Genesis 2:7 as a statement about every Jewish soul — and the two names of God as two ways He meets the world.

The texts
12Text 12Later / Mystical Tradition · Summary

“Truly a part of God above”

Tanya, chapter 2
The second soul of a Jew is truly a part of God above, as it is written: “And He blew into his nostrils the breath of life.” And as the Zohar says: one who blows, blows from within himself.
Step by step
  1. Read the chapter below. The Alter Rebbe, author of the Tanya, teaches that the Divine soul is “truly a part of God above.”
  2. His proof is our verse. God “blew” the breath of life — and one who blows, blows from within. Speech comes from the outside of a person; breath comes from deep inside.
  3. What to take from it. Everything else in creation God spoke. You, He breathed.
  4. Note: the Zohar line is quoted by the Tanya; its exact place in the Zohar requires verification.
13Text 13Later / Mystical Tradition

The sun and its shield

Tanya, Sha’ar HaYichud VehaEmunah 4 and 6
“For the Lord God is a sun and a shield” (Psalms 84:12).
Step by step
  1. The image. The four-letter name is like the sun — endless giving. The name Elokim is like the shield that covers the sun, so the world can exist and is not overwhelmed.
  2. Nature is the mask. In chapter 6, the Alter Rebbe notes that Elokim has the same numerical value as the Hebrew word for “nature” (86).
  3. Back to Genesis. Chapter 1, told only with Elokim, is the world as nature, with God hidden behind it. Chapter 2 adds the name of mercy: the sun shining through the shield, close enough to breathe into one person.
The two Adams — Later / Mystical Tradition

Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (The Lonely Man of Faith, 1965) called the human of chapter 1 “Adam the first” — the builder who masters the world — and the human of chapter 2 “Adam the second” — the seeker who asks why he is here and who will know him. God wants both.

Think it through
Look at your past week. How many hours did you live as the builder, and how many as the seeker?Think about it first — then tap for discussion notes

Most of us live almost entirely in chapter 1 — work, phones, calendars. Chapter 2 needs a different kind of time: prayer, a real conversation, Shabbat. The Torah gives us a weekly appointment where the builder stops.

Key takeaways
  • The soul is “truly a part of God above” (Tanya 2).
  • God spoke the world; He breathed the soul.
  • Hashem is the sun; Elokim is the shield (Sha’ar HaYichud 4).
  • Builder and seeker — God wants both.
