What this lesson is about
After prophecies, calculations and wars, we open the most careful legal code in Jewish history. The Rambam ends his Mishneh Torah with two chapters on Mashiach.

How we know who Mashiach is
Rambam, Hilchot Melachim 11:4
If a king arises from the house of David, who studies Torah and keeps the mitzvot like David his ancestor, and leads all Israel to walk in it, and fights the wars of Hashem — he is presumed to be Mashiach. If he did this and succeeded, built the Temple in its place, and gathered the dispersed of Israel — he is Mashiach with certainty. And he will repair the whole world to serve Hashem together.
Step by step
Two stages. First a “presumed” Mashiach — defined by Torah, mitzvot, leadership and the wars of Hashem. Then “certain” Mashiach — defined by results: the Temple rebuilt and the exiles gathered.
Notice what is missing: miracles, signs, feelings, charisma. The test is what actually happens.

Don’t make it the center
Rambam, Hilchot Melachim 12:2
All these things and their like — no one will know how they will be until they happen… A person should not occupy himself with these matters or make them central, for they bring neither to fear nor to love of Hashem. And one should not calculate the end.
Step by step
Humility about details. Even the sages did not have a clear tradition about how these things will unfold.
Priorities. Speculation does not bring a person to love or fear of Hashem — so it should not be the center of our religious life.

The end of the Mishneh Torah
Rambam, Hilchot Melachim 12:5
In that time there will be no famine and no war, no jealousy and no competition… The whole world will be occupied only with knowing Hashem. Israel will be great sages and will know hidden things, as it says: “For the earth shall be filled with knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea.”

The last halachah. Read it in full below — it is the final paragraph of the entire Mishneh Torah.
Back to Lesson 2. The most careful, anti-speculative authority in Jewish history ends with our theme: Israel will know hidden things. The veil lifts — through knowledge and Torah, not through calculation.
Think it through
Why does the Rambam define Mashiach by results — not by feelings, miracles or charisma?Think about it first — then tap for discussion notes
Because feelings and miracles can be misread or faked, and history is full of false messiahs who inspired great hope. Results — the Temple rebuilt, the exiles gathered, the world serving Hashem — cannot be faked.
Key takeaways
Presumed Mashiach: Torah, mitzvot, leadership. Certain: Temple and ingathering.
No one knows the details until they happen.
Do not make speculation central; do not calculate.
The Mishneh Torah ends with “as the waters cover the sea.”
