Mashiach at the gates of Rome

Sanhedrin 98a
Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi found Mashiach at the gates of Rome, sitting among the poor and the sick, unbinding and rebinding his wounds one at a time, so that if he were called he would not be delayed. He asked: “When will the master come?” He answered: “Today.” … Eliyahu explained: “Today — if you will listen to His voice” (Tehillim 95:7).
Step by step
  1. The story (full passage below). Mashiach sits among the suffering, tending his wounds one at a time so he will be ready the moment he is called.
  2. “Today.” Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi thought Mashiach had misled him — today came and went. Eliyahu explains: “Today — if you will listen to His voice.” The date depends on us.
  3. One mitzvah. The Rambam (Hilchot Teshuvah 3:4): a person should see himself and the whole world as perfectly balanced — one mitzvah can tip himself and the entire world to the side of merit.
