What this lesson is about

According to the Torah, the physical world is not all that exists. Do the sources say we will see more as redemption approaches?

The mountain full of chariots of fire

II Melachim 6:17
Elisha prayed: “Hashem, open his eyes, that he may see.” And Hashem opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw — the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Step by step
  1. The story. An enemy army surrounds the city to capture the prophet Elisha. His servant panics. Elisha says, “Those with us are more than those with them,” and prays that the servant’s eyes be opened — and he sees the mountain full of fiery horses and chariots.
  2. The key question: when did the chariots of fire arrive? The text implies they were already there. Only the servant’s eyes changed.
  3. The promise. “Your Teacher will no longer hide Himself; your eyes shall see your Teacher” (Isaiah 30:20). “I will no longer hide My face from them” (Ezekiel 39:29).
  4. Uncovered eyes. “Then Hashem uncovered the eyes of Bilam, and he saw the angel” (Bamidbar 22:31) — and the donkey had seen first.
The ladder — Mishnah Sotah 9:15

Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair: Torah leads to care… to holiness, humility, fear of sin, piety — then Divine inspiration — then the resurrection of the dead. Seeing is the top of a ladder you climb step by step.

What we don’t say — our guardrail

Unexplained phenomena are exactly that — unexplained. No Jewish source calls them angels or signs of Mashiach.

Think it through
When did the chariots of fire arrive?Think about it first — then tap for discussion notes

Before the servant saw them — the verse says Hashem opened his eyes, not that He sent an army. That is the same pattern as Hagar’s well (Lesson 1): revelation as seeing what is already there.

Key takeaways
  • Elisha’s servant saw what was already around him.
  • The prophets promise Hashem will no longer hide.
  • Seeing is the top of a ladder of growth (Sotah 9:15).
  • We do not call the unexplained a sign.
