What this lesson is about

The Talmud gave us darkness before dawn. The Zohar gives us something surprising: a flood of wisdom before the seventh millennium.

The gates of wisdom open

Zohar I:117a, Vayera
“In the six hundredth year of the sixth millennium, the gates of wisdom above will open, and the wellsprings of wisdom below, and the world will prepare to enter the seventh, like a person who prepares on the sixth day, as the sun sets, to enter Shabbat. And your sign: ‘In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life… all the wellsprings of the great deep burst open, and the windows of heaven were opened’ (Bereishit 7:11).”
Step by step
  1. The calendar. The Jewish year count is about 6,000 years old; the seventh millennium is compared to Shabbat. The “six hundredth year of the sixth millennium” is the year 5600 — 1840 on the secular calendar.
  2. Read it carefully (full passage below). The Zohar says wisdom will open “above” and “below,” and the world will begin to prepare, like a person getting ready for Shabbat late on Friday. It does not say Mashiach comes in 5600.
  3. The sign. The Zohar links this to Noah’s flood (Bereishit 7:11): in Noah’s 600th year the windows of heaven and the fountains of the deep opened — and the world was covered with destruction. In the 600th year of the sixth millennium, wisdom opens from above and below — and the world will be covered with knowledge, “as the waters cover the sea.”
Two floods

Noah’s 600th year: windows of heaven and wellsprings of the deep open — the world covered with destruction. The 600th year of the 6th millennium: gates of wisdom above and wellsprings of wisdom below open — the world covered with knowledge.

The letter of the Baal Shem Tov

Rosh Hashanah 5507 (1746)
His soul ascended on high, and he asked Mashiach: “When will the master come?” The answer: when your teaching is made known and revealed in the world, and your wellsprings spread outward.
Step by step
  1. The source. In a letter to his brother-in-law, the Baal Shem Tov (founder of Chassidut) describes an ascent of his soul on Rosh Hashanah 5507 (1746), in which he asked Mashiach when he would come.
  2. The answer ties redemption to teaching: when the inner wellsprings of Torah spread outward.
  3. A later reading — label it carefully. Later Chassidic teachers read the Zohar’s “wisdom above” as the spread of Torah and its inner dimension, and “wisdom below” as the explosion of science and technology — both meant, in the end, to reveal Hashem. That is a reading (Later Tradition), not the Zohar’s own words.
Think it through
What might “wisdom above” mean? What might “wisdom below” mean?Think about it first — then tap for discussion notes

Discuss both levels. One later reading: “above” = Torah, especially its inner, mystical dimension becoming widely available; “below” = scientific and technological knowledge. Ask whether the two have in fact grown together since 1840 — and what each is for.

Key takeaways
  • Zohar Vayera: wisdom opens in the 600th year of the 6th millennium (1840).
  • It speaks of preparing — not of a date for Mashiach.
  • Two floods: Noah’s of water, ours of knowledge.
  • The Baal Shem Tov: Mashiach comes when the wellsprings spread outward.
