We have asked when and how. The Tanya asks why. Why would Hashem create a world where He is hidden at all?

A dwelling place below

Midrash Tanchuma, Nasso 16
“The Holy One, blessed be He, desired to have a dwelling place in the lower realms.”
Step by step
  1. The Midrash (full passage below): just as Hashem has a dwelling above, He desired one below — in our world.

Why the lowest world

Tanya, ch. 36–37
For Hashem there is no “up” and “down.” This world is the “lowest” because here His light is most hidden — so hidden that a person can deny Him. The purpose is that the darkness itself be transformed into light… “The ultimate perfection of the days of Mashiach and the resurrection of the dead — the revelation of the Infinite light in this physical world — depends on our actions and our service throughout the time of exile.”
Step by step
  1. Chapter 36. “Lowest” does not mean physically down; it means most hidden. Hashem wanted a dwelling precisely where He is hardest to see — so that darkness itself would be turned into light.
  2. Chapter 37. The revelation of the days of Mashiach depends on what we do now — every mitzvah in exile builds it.

Think it through
Why would Hashem create a world capable of denying its Creator?Think about it first — then tap for discussion notes

The Tanya’s answer: because the goal was a dwelling for Hashem in the place that hides Him most. The purpose was never to escape the physical world — it is for the physical world itself to reveal Hashem.

Key takeaways
  • Hashem desired a dwelling in the lowest world.
  • “Lowest” means most hidden — not physically down.
  • The revelation of Mashiach depends on our actions now.
